The Mickleover to Eggington Trail
Working alongside the City and County Councils, as well as the charity SUSTRANS*, the DDEP provided funding to transform a 40-acre stretch of derelict railway between Mickleover and Eggington into a multi-use leisure and commuter trail for cyclists and walkers.
This was the fourth and final phase in a bid to change the way that local residents can travel between work, home, school and nearby facilities instead of having to use narrow, busy roads. The work adds a further 1.8 km to the 6.6 km that previous phases have already converted. It has had to deal with the trip hazards and uncovered pits that line the track as well as establishing a modern drainage system to cope with the flooding the area is prone to as well as a complete re-surfacing.
*SUSTRANS is a charity dedicated to practical projects that encourage people to walk, cycle, and use more public transport.
